Alumnus of the 2012 Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project wins two Tony Awards.
Shaina Taub, an alumnus of our 2012 JMF Songwriters Project, took home not one, but two Tony Awards last night for her show Suffs!
Shaina won awards for Best Original Score and Best Book, which makes her the first woman to ever independently win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season. She also received four other Tony nominations, including Best Musical. You can read the full announcement here.
Shaina has been working on Suffs for over a decade, and it finally hit Broadway’s Music Box Theatre this April with co-stars Jenn Colella and Nikki M. James, as well as co-producers Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai.
Suffs tells the story of the women’s suffrage movement as they struggle to win their right to vote. Shaina stars as Alice Paul, a leader of the movement and organizer of the first suffragist march in Washington D.C.
Our sincerest congratulations to Shaina, and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
